Many people have no desire going to the gym and they rather stay at home and train there. Working out at home may not bring you the same results like if you would go to the gym, but you will definitely see many benefits. Of course, you’re gonna need some equipment to fulfill your goals. So, what is the best home exercise equipment you might need for good training?
If you’re not a gym fan, but you like to workout, you always have the choice to exercise at home. If you have no bodybuilding goals like competing or so, you even don’t need to own much equipment. Incorporating body – weight exercises with some free – weight exercises might be enough for somebody.
It really all depends on what your goals are, the bigger they are – more equipment is needed. More equipment equals more money needed. It’s a vicious circle indeed. For most of us, money is the main problem, so we got to choose the wanted equipment wisely.
Bodybuilding is an expensive sport, that’s for sure. I’m sure many of you realized that from first hand. Buying foods, supplements, and other stuff can quickly empty your wallet. That doesn’t leave you much money for buying equipment. So, if you’re short of money, you will buy the basic equipment first, of course. It might pass a long time until you can say you own a home gym.
What do you need?
Dumbbells are really a basic piece of equipment and literally everybody starts from here. You can’t imagine an ordinary workout without using dumbbells. They can be used in almost every exercise, for every body part. Adjustable dumbbells are a good choice. For some exercises you will need more weight – mostly when doing bigger body parts; and for some exercises less weight – smaller body parts and isolation exercises. It would be ideal to have few sets of dumbbells so you don’t have to change the plates all the times between sets. This can be pretty tough ( won’t say impossible ) when you’re doing super set, drop sets and so…
There are several models of dumbbells you can purchase, some of them better, and some of them of worse quality. This dumbbell I consider as a top model – not only you get a lot of different weights for less money, but also, they take up a lot less space than ordinary dumbbells. It’s really a masterpiece of equipment.
Chin – up bar
Body weight exercises are very common because they really are very effective. With a simple door mounted chin – up bar you can do different types of pull – ups and chin – ups: close grip, wide grip and neutral grip for developing different parts of the whole back area. But also, other muscle groups like biceps do a lot of work here.
This is a great piece of equipment: it’s inexpensive, multi practical and easy to mount to your doorway. You can use it as back and biceps exercise tool when performing chin – ups and pull – ups; as chest and triceps exercise tool when you put it on the floor; as a tool when performing crunches.
Very simple piece of equipment but we mustn’t underestimate its role in weight loss. Rope jumping is certainly one of the most efficient ways of doing cardio. It really melts the fat tissue from your critical spots. Also, it improves your coordination and skills. There are several types of jump ropes but leather ones and plastic ones are the ones you should consider buying.
Exercise bands are a good alternative for dumbbells and cables. They hit the muscle in a somewhat different manner than free weights so it’s good to shock your muscles with bands from time to time, at least to break the routine. You can do many exercises with bands so that makes them such a good choice. They are inexpensive and available to everybody. If you want to know more about exercise bands you can read my earlier article about resistance bands.
The bench is certainly a very useful tool. You can use it for plenty of exercises. It’s impossible to build respectful chest without having a bench, that’s for sure. Yes, the stability ball can do the work, but it just can’t replace the bench. Having an adjustable bench is the key to fulfilling your goals – barbell bench press is the mother of all chest exercises, and there’s no better exercise than incline bench press to build your upper chest.
Bench can be used for other exercises too. You can do certain biceps, triceps, abs, legs, shoulder and back exercises also. Bench is a piece of equipment you will definitely use very often in your workout routine so it definitely should be on your must have home equipment list.
Barbell and free weights
We all know that the real gains come from real weight. Dumbbells can do good work but barbell is often the key to muscle growth. I’m sure you’ve all heard that for best results you will have to put some heavy plates on the bar. Dumbbells are great tools, with a higher range of motion, but when it comes to adding weight, they can’t be compared to a barbell.
